Announcement    CURRENT LEAD TIMES
Slightly longer as I'm taking a week off. If you had a deadline, please get in touch.
As always, I may sometimes have to extend processing time if drying isn't going "as expected" :) this is a bit more likely during cold and wet weather.

Thank you so much for visiting Beyond Indigo, where it's all about a love of colour!
I make handmade watercolour paint and handmade paper in various shapes, sizes and colours. I adore making new convenience colours and cute textured papers. Have a look around and I'm sure you'll find something you like!
If you have any questions about your order, or in general, please don't hesitate to message me. I love to work on custom colours, palettes, paper etc. and I'm generally happy to combine half pans to full pans or sub colours if you're ordering, for example, multiple palettes but a couple of colours overlap.

Notes on extending lead times:
Generally, I'll try not to extend your ship date and instead I may send an upgrade instead (e.g. if you ordered a half pan, I may send you a partially filled full pan so I don't have to delay your order; if you ordered a dot, I may send you a partially filled half). These decisions are made at my own discretion and depend on stock, so you may get an upgrade but no promises are made! It's all to ensure you get the amount of paint you ordered, even if it's in a slightly different guise :)
For paper I'm limited by drying space and pressing time to make sure your paper is dry and flat. Lead times may change as I get a better feel for how long batches take me to make :)

I also run three other shops:
Doodlepeople.etsy.com currently on hiatus
Slowdriftdesigns.etsy.com where I sell digital assets
AlyceWoodArtist.etsy.com where I sell print-at-home wall art

Frequently asked questions

Are your pans plastic?

They are, but I am in the process of switching over to my own biodegradable 3D printed pans in various sizes. These are made from PLA which is biodegradable in an industrial setting (or over approximately 80 years - a long time, but better than never).
You may still get a regular plastic pan whilst I'm in this changeover period as I obviously don't want to waste them. I will update this FAQ when I'm fully switched over. :)
For the 3D printed pans, I'm gonna try and stick to white. They may be black or another colour if I run into any filament stock issues. If you have a colour preference please let me know and whilst I cannot make any promises, I will do my best to accommodate you.

Shipping and packaging

Paints are wrapped by hand in tissue and sent in a small box designed to fit through a letterbox. All packaging is recyclable or biodegradable.
Dotcards and paper are sent in bio-cello bags and depending on order size, may be sent in a box or a boardback envelope. For international orders I may enclose paints within a bio-cello bag to protect from bad weather.
Your order will be sent standard mail. In the UK, this comes with delivery confirmation. For international orders, this is UNTRACKED unless you upgrade at checkout. I would recommend upgrading to a tracked service for larger orders, so they are insured for their full value should anything go wrong.
If your order goes missing or arrives damaged, please contact me ASAP for help! :)

Are your paints vegetarian/vegan?

There are a number of ingredients in my paints which would need to be considered from a vegetarian/vegan point of view.

1. I use honey in my binder. This depends on your view of veganism as cruelty-free or exploitation-free. The vegan society does not consider honey to be vegan.
2. I use glycerin in my binder. It is vegetable-derived, not tallow-derived.
3. I use SYNTHETIC ox gall in some paints (added separately, not to my binder).

The above information should help to make your decision on whether my paints are right for you. I cannot exclude binder-based ingredients without fundamentally altering the behaviour of my paints. Message me if you'd like to know which colours have ox gall (but remember, it's synthetic, so not animal-derived).

Paint and paper info cards

As standard, each order will come with a little info sheet on how I make my paint or paper.
You will also get a mini (A7 size) info card per paint colour or paper type which explains a bit about it, how it behaves and some background - we love colour with a story, amirite?
These cards are laser printed, so you can swatch on them. :)
If you are visually impaired and would like to request a large print version of the info (A5 size instead of A7), please let me know when you order.
If you don't want any extra stuff at all, let me know when you order and I can instead send you the same information, digitally in PDF format, to your preferred email.

How are your paints made?

These paints are handcrafted by me in my studio from powdered pigments and a binder that is also made from base ingredients by me, making this paint entirely handmade.
The pigment and binder are mixed together through a process called mulling, where using a glass mulling tool and a glass panel, I mix the pigment thoroughly into the binder - binding it!
These paints are then hand poured into half or full pans, or dotted on dotcards, for your painterly enjoyment.
Since these paints are all handmade in small batches, colours and behaviour may vary slightly from batch to batch. Colour may also appear different from what you see on screen - all monitors are calibrated uniquely and a photo on a backlit screen will look different from real life.

What if there are bubbles and cracks in my paint?

There may, on occasion, be small bubbles, cracks, unevenness in the surface of a pan, etc. This is normal for handmade paints as some pigment react differently with the binder or during the drying process. Some binder differs by batch, too, and I make my own so I am beholden to my lousy human eyes when measuring the gum arabic, water, glycerin, etc.
That said, please do contact me via Etsy message if there are any large cavities in your pans!
Sometimes bubbles don't make it to the surface and can disrupt the integrity of a paint without being initially visible.
If this issue arises, I'm always more than happy to fix it for you! :)

What sizes do you offer?

Dot card samples are available in one handy listing here: etsy.com/uk/listing/1527236321/dot-card-samples-handmade-watercolour
A dot card is a great way to try a paint if you're not sure you want a half or full pan yet. It's just as it sounds, a dot of paint on a card.
Half pan: a standard half pan (20mm by 17mm and 10mm deep) full of hand poured paint; the surface may be concave as a result of the drying process, but I always make sure my pans are well filled.
Full pan: a standard full pan (30mm by 18mm and 10mm deep) full of hand poured paint; as above, the surface may be concave from the drying process but pans will be well filled.

I am currently exploring different sizes and shapes of pans that I 3D print myself.

A note about handmade paper weight

Handmade paper is exactly what it sounds like: completely handmade. I make my handmade paper myself, using a mould and deckle to pull individual sheets from a big plastic box full of water and pulp. Small batch, slowly made.
As such, paper weight will vary between batches and within a batch! I do my best to keep things consistent but I'm only human, and it's part of the beauty of handmade that it's not completely uniform.
If you want a specific type of paper in a specific weight, please do get in touch and I'm sure I can pull a custom batch for you. :) My paper, like my paints for the most part, are made to order, so adjustments can be made with enough notice.
